How to Get Around Chiang Mai

How to travel from Chiang Mai airport to the hotel using the airport taxi, and for other travels within Chiang Mai, you can use Grab or take a red songthaew:

1. Travel from Chiang Mai Airport to the Hotel using Airport Taxi:

Upon arrival at Chiang Mai International Airport, proceed to the designated taxi stand located just outside the arrival terminal. You will find official airport taxis lined up, usually in bright colors, with a clear "Taxi" sign on top. These taxis are operated by licensed drivers and offer a safe and convenient way to reach your hotel. Approach one of the taxi drivers and inform them of your hotel's name and address in Thai or English. If you have the hotel's name written down in Thai script, it can be helpful to show it to the driver. The driver will then provide you with the taxi fare based on your destination. Please note that there might be fixed-rate fares to different areas of the city, or the fare might be determined by the meter, depending on the specific airport taxi service. If you agree with the fare, you can proceed with the taxi to your hotel. The journey from the airport to most hotels in the city center usually takes around 15-30 minutes, depending on the location and traffic conditions.

2. For Other Travels within Chiang Mai:

2.1. Grab Grab is a popular ride-hailing app in Thailand. To use Grab, you need to have the Grab app installed on your smartphone. Download the Grab app from your app store and sign up or log in if you already have an account.

Enter your current location (pick-up point) and your desired destination (drop-off point) within Chiang Mai.

The app will display the available Grab services such as GrabCar (private car) or GrabTaxi. It will also show the estimated fare for your trip.

Confirm your booking and wait for your Grab driver to pick you up. Payment is usually made through the app, so you don't need to worry about carrying cash for the ride

2.2. Red Songthaew Songthaews are shared taxis or passenger trucks with two benches in the back, and they come in various colors denoting different routes. The red songthaews commonly operate within the city and nearby areas.

To use a red songthaew, you can flag one down by raising your hand at the side of the road, or you can find them at designated songthaew stops around the city.

Tell the driver your destination, and if it's on their route, they will usually nod to indicate they'll take you there.

Once inside the songthaew, let the driver know when you want to alight by saying "Stop" or "Yut" (in Thai).

Payment is usually made in cash directly to the driver upon reaching your destination. The fare for songthaews is relatively inexpensive, and it's a great way to experience local transportation and interact with other passengers.

Always ensure your safety when using any transportation service and be aware of the local customs and regulations. Chiang Mai is generally a friendly and tourist-friendly city, but it's good to exercise caution and choose reputable services for your travels.
